Other Artists and Revolution

Two great Mexican muralists and artists that used art to speak their political views are José Clemente Orozco (1883-1949) and David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896 - 1974).

Orozco was born in Jalisco and frequently criticized various aspects of the Revolution that he had witnessed personally. Frequent themes that appear in Orozco's works are inequality, corruption, cruelty, bribery and false nature of government officials, submission and suffering or death of the masses for their ideals, somberness and solitude.

Siquieros dedicated the great part of his life to political and economic struggles and personally participated in union labor movements and support of revolutionary forces in Mexico and Spain. His energy, dynamic and aggressive nature and enthusiasm for controversial political activities landed him in jail for periods of time. Siqueiros' themes are always social: the suffering of the working class; the conflict between Socialism and Capitalism, the progress of the people, the shout out against injustice and misery.

  1. "El Sollozo"

In the first painting the body part I notice most are the arms. I believe it goes to show that during war everybody has to be tough whether a man or a women. When people are sad or angry they often clench their fists tightly for a physical release of pain or anger.

The women depicted in the picture is showing anger, fear, sadness and despair.

  2. "La Trinchera"

The theme depicted is a sense of sadness and despair during times of war. The kneeling mans dead comrades seem propped up as to make the enemy belive that they are still alive producing the illusion that there are more men.

I get a sense of sorrow, grieving and agony. Also mourning.

  3. "El Sollozo"

The first body part that I notice are the hands. They seem to be clasped tightly. I think they are highlighted, because hands tend to carry a lot of emotion. The women in the painting seems to exhibit distress, agony, and a feeling of loss.
